Key Word Signing

· Key word sign is the use of Auslan signs to sign key words in spoken sentences, combined with body language and facial expressions.  It is designed to support spoken language.

Many people may be familiar with Makaton signing.  Makaton Signing was renamed keyword signing in 2010.  Key word sign highlights only the key words / concepts using signs.

It also encourages language development and supports more positive communication interactions for children or adults who have communication support needs.

Key word sign can be used with a range of modes of communicating including gestures, pictures, symbols, written words and speech in order to support communication.

· Auslan is the sign language of the Australian Deaf Community.  It has a distinct grammar and vocabulary to English.  At various times our school has supported deaf students who have received services from Auslan Interpreters.
